We are the Ukrainian National Environmental NGO MAMA-86!

In 1990, young mothers with university education, concerned about the effects of the Chernobyl disaster on health, teamed up to protect the interests of their children. In 1991 we became Kyiv NGO “MAMA-86 Kyiv” and in 2001 MAMA-86 received national status. Now the organization includes 19 regional branches. The central office of MAMA-86 is located in Kyiv.

For 25 years MAMA-86 has been actively promoting sustainable development through monitoring and analysing environmental policy, public advocacy, we well as raising awareness and implementing projects in three priority areas:

Ecologization of policy and practice

Goal 1: Fostering the broadest possible public participation in the transparent implementation of the State Environmental Policy and National Action Plan.

Goal 2: Promoting an environmentally friendly lifestyle and sustainable consumption and production in Ukraine.

Goal 3: Fostering and sustaining a stakeholders’ dialogue based on the Aarhus Convention concerning the nuclear power industry.

Goal 4: Conducting public monitoring and promoting public participation during Ukraine’s Eurointegration in the environmental field.

Access to safe drinking water and sanitation for all

Goal 1: Implementing mechanisms for public participation in water management.

Goal 2: Promoting equal rights to water and sanitation in Ukraine.

Goal 3: Implementing and promoting best practices in water usage and sanitation in Ukraine.

Safe management of hazardous chemicals and waste

Goal 1: Successful implementation of the four chemical conventions (Stockholm, Rotterdam, Basel, Minamata) and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).

Goal 2: Introducing safe and efficient handling of hazardous waste (obsolete pesticides, chemical by-products, etc.) and toxic chemicals.

Goal 3: Ensuring that the management of solid waste is done properly and in a sustainable way in both households and communities.

  • Our mission is to protect the right of future generations to a clean environment!
  • Our strength is a nationwide network of 19 regional offices.
  • Our methods are to analyse the now, implement the new, learn and impart knowledge to others, and collaborate with peers.

The organization also implements a program on strengthening the capacity of environmental NGOs in Ukraine.

The UNENGO MAMA-86 works on different levels — from local to international, supports partnerships with many NGOs in Ukraine and abroad and is a member of numerous Ukrainian and international networks and organizations: WSSCC, WECF, ANPED, ECO-Forum, GWP, WfWP, IPEN, Ukrainian river network, INFORSE-Europe, GAIA.

We are directly involved in the preparation of:

  • Annual public assessment of the implementation of the National Environmental Policy of Ukraine for 2012–2016.
  • Draft National Action Plan on Environmental Protection for 2016–2020.
  • Law of Ukraine “On Drinking Water and Water Supply” in 2002.
  • National Program “Drinking Water in Ukraine” in 2005.
  • National Indicators of the Protocol on Water and Health.
  • Short report on the progress in implementing the Protocol on Water and Health in Ukraine in 2013.
  • Self-assessment on ensuring equal rights to water and sanitation in Ukraine at the national and local level in 2013.
  • Development of the management plan for river basins of the upper Dnipro and Prut in 2015.
  • Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the National Plan of the Stockholm Convention on POPs. 

Statistics we are proud of:

  • The first environment NGOs to engage in the implementation of technical solutions to address local issues of access to safe drinking water and in 1998 implemented a project on improving the drinking water purification system for a kindergarten in Tatarbunary city in Odessa region.
  • Since 1998, implemented 30 pilot projects to improve access to drinking water in 12 regions of Ukraine.
  • In 2004, the first to build a dry toilet for school in Ukraine in Hozhuly village in Poltava region.
  • Built 5 ecosan toilets and over 100 dry toilets and 11 systems of local waste water treatment for households in 12 regions of Ukraine.
  • Held 5 Green Action Weeks dedicated to popularizing sustainable consumption since 2012.
  • Examined 50 toys bought in stores and Ukrainian markets for heavy metals in 2012.
  • Examined for lead content 53 samples of decorative solvent-based paints and enamels, which were purchased in specialized shops in Kyiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv in 2016.
  • For the first time in Ukraine, as a part of an international survey collected and analysed the opinions of over 900 customers and more than 50 companies and industries on chemical safety in 2015.
  • In 2015–2016, 33 local environmental organizations were trained to enhance their capacity to influence environmental policy in Ukraine as part of the School for representatives of environmental NGOs.

Most recent direct action projects

  • Development and implementation of Water Safety Plans for drinking water and sanitation for eight communities and consumer groups for 2015–2016.
  • Five pilot projects were implemented in 2015–2016 in various regions of Ukraine aimed at creating models and involving local communities for a final solution to the problem of obsolete pesticides in Ukraine.
  • Developed the Communications and Public Awareness Strategy on POPs and obsolete pesticides.

An important part of our activity is informational and educational work. We have prepared and distributed for free thousands of publications and held hundreds of environmental lessons and lectures in schools as well as many competitions, festivals and events in different parts of Ukraine.
